Schuyler Colfax was vice-president of the United States from 1869-73, President Grant's first term. He bought the "South Bend Free Press" in 1845 after editing it for a few years and changed the name to the "St. Joseph Valley Register." He is buried in South Bend's historic City Cemetery.
